Kenya Power Invest Sh96 Million in Kakamega Power Upgrade

Posted on : Wednesday , 17th December 2014

Nairobi — Power supply in Kakamega is expected to improve as Kenya Power conducts a massive operation this weekend to rehabilitate power equipment and network serving the County at a cost of Sh96 million.

Managing Director Ben Chumo says the exercise will ensure that the electricity network serving Kakamega County is robust and power supply consistent, to support efforts to minimise power outages occasioned by both planned and unplanned outages.

Chumo said the Company will replace 620 wooden poles with 60 concrete poles and refurbish 20 distribution transformers in the county.

The national power distributor also plan to connect 400 new customers, conduct extensive repair works within Kakamega County as well as upgrade overloaded electricity lines serving customers in the area.

"I am aware that in the recent past, we have had challenges on the quality of supply within Kakamega County due to adverse weather conditions characterised by lightening, thunderstorms and heavy rains, among others," he said.
The company has carried out similar exercises in 23 other towns countrywide at a combined cost of Sh1.7 billion.
Chumo further urged county governments to set aside funds for constructing new power lines to supply power to their citizens not covered by the existing grid.
